This convinces me that unlike old FD Canon and old Nikons, our EOS gear
will probably be trash in 20 years. Sure some of it is built to rugged
professional standards, but when Canon discontinues parts support, as
they are sure to do eventually (are all parts for EOS 6xx's available)
how are you going to fix this stuff?
How many EF 400mm f/2.8 L's will you need to cannibalize to get a USM or
Electro-Magnetic diaphragm for yours?
Remember, most of the USM lenses (certainly the higher-end ones) CANNOT
be manually focused without a working focusing motor.
What's an EF 300mm f/2.8 L worth with a dead and unreplacable focusing motor?
Maybe we would be smarter stocking up on some good old Canon FD stuff!
Oh, by the way, pro's won't care a lot about this as they can write new
gear off and/or get their employer to buy the new gear. Successful
pro's, that is! In the computer graphics/prepress field we are pretty
used to the fact that the Mac you buy today, will be scrap in 3 years,
but most of the high-end hardware, scanners and imagesetters have been
supported by their manufacturers for 10 or more years. I still feel bad
when someone calls me and says they bought an old piece of equipment and
discover that it isn't supported anymore and can't be repaired.
This will happen to us, someday.
Mr. Bill
