I've only had one lens with a problem focusing, and
that was a 100-300 USM I bought used. Everything else
has worked flawlessly, including my original 50mm 1.8
bought new at the same time as my original EOS 650
(which I no longer own, but is still working fine in
the hands of it's new owner). Those items are about
14 years old, but of course neither of them have USM
motors.

To the person who was concerned about getting new USM
motors years down the road: For the pro series
lenses, at least, I suspect Canon will have these
parts available for a long, long time. They continued
to support the Canon F1 with spares and service for
many, many years after most everyone had switched to
EOS bodies and lenses.
