What technical reason is there behind the claim that digital cameras have
large depth of fields?
Will you have a larger depth of field with a digital camera using a 100mm
lens, than a film camera using an equivalent lens?

I have no experience with digital cameras, I said I read it (on a photo.net review of
the Canon G1) somewhere. What it said was that the user expected a blurred background
because of the f/2.5 lens at portrait length (35 mm equiv of 84 mm). But since the
lens is an actual 21 mm, there is a larger depth of field than expected and blurred
backgrounds are not as easy to achieve with digital equipment.
I did not intend to say that a 100 mm lens will have a different depth of field based
on the camera it was mounted, only that a digital "100mm equivalent" lens will have
more depth of field than an actual 100 mm lens used on a 35 mm camera.
