OK, I can't find what thread we were talking about it in, but I did an
experiment yesterday with the rapid focus tracking of my Elan 7
coupled with the 75-300 III lens. In any case, I had reported some
difficulty in combining AI Servo with continuous frame advance - that
focus didn't seem to be holding. Julian pointed out that it was
recommended to use auto focus point select under these circumstances
which I hadn't been doing, and I tried this yesterday.

Julian - I did not experience any of the delays you described, it
fired instantly and rapidly. And all the shots were in focus! I'm
thrilled, and given the limitations in sharpness of the 75-300 and my
current scanning equipment., very happy with the results. I posted
them on my site - on the birds page, right column downward, a series
of three shots of a Great Blue Heron - who happened along to grace my
experiment! - taking off. The shots have been tweaked a bit in PS
Elements to restore their appearance as in the original prints.
