I used the Quantum Turbo for @ 3 years with few complaints, until I
wanted to run two flash units from it. The splitter cable is USELESS! I went
through 3 or 4 and none of them worked satisfactorily. I've now got a
Lumedyne MegaCycler which comes in 2 parts, one for the electronics
(including 2 seperate sockets for flash cables) and the other part is the
battery cell. This means you can take one of three size batteries depending
on your needs, or take a spare. It also means that when the battery cell has
run it's life (approx. 3 years) I only have to replace that part, unlike the
Quantum units where you have to buy a whole new pack.
As for modifying the flashs' cover plate, I only had to do this with an
old Mini Quantum and 430 flash head (in fact you didn't NEED to modify it,
you could just leave the battery compartment door open). With the Quantum
Turbo and 540 or 550 flashes the Turbo is supplementary to the 4 AA
batteries in the flash, and the connector goes into the socket directly
beneath the battery compartment.
Another point is that on the Quantum Turbo the connector socket is held
inside the unit by just two solder points. Eventually after lots of
connecting and dis-connecting they will break and will need to repaired.
It's a simple job, but they'll charge you a bomb. The Lumedynes' had a
similar problem, but that's now resolved by securing the socket with a metal
collar screwed to the top-plate.
A down-side to the Lumedyne is that it has no 'charge remaing'
indicator, so you have to guesstimate how much power you have left, and
there's no safty lock on the on/off switch.
Alternatively, look at JackRabbit units (only availiable in US). I know
lots of press pros there use them.
Hope I've been of some help,
James
