That was me :-) and you have good memory...
Actually, my 28-135IS has been to the doctor 4 times. Three of them for IS
malfunction and the last one for an extrange metalic sound when focusing
towards infinite.
The three first were under warranty. For the last one, the warranty was
already expired but Canon didn't ask me for a cent. (I can't complain) I
think I still was under the 6-month warranty of the last repair.
I've to say it again: The 28-135 is a little baby (despite of its 450gr)
and you have to take good care of it. All the IS malfunctions in my case
were the result of the lens having a shock. I had nothing to do with the
focusing noise, though.
