I've got the solution to this problem with getting backgrounds exposed
nicely while using flash for fill. It's called fast film. I've used some
Superia 800 and 1600 with excellent results. I couldn't believe I was
shooting at a decent shutter speed and didn't have to shoot wide open
either. And that was in some pretty dark rooms. Oh, but I don't want big
grain you say - well, the Superia I've shot has excellent grain, and there
really is no other choice unless 'deer in the headlights' with fine grain is
something you prefer. The fact is, shooting 800 speed film, I don't even
need a flash in most reasonably lit rooms. And Superia handles mixed
lighting very well. I like using the flash just for faces and some
catchlights. But the shots I've taken using only available light have great
contrast and colour.
So if you're like me and don't have superfast, expensive lenses, IS, or
multiple flash setups, try some fast film.
