While I agree that A-TTL is certainly not the ultimate fill flash
mode on earth, it would probably have worked fine for the image
Greenspun shows as an example of the "inferiority" of A-TTL.
Seems like he was (is?) not aware, that recomposing after AF has
done its thing is a big nono with A-TTL and even with TTL in case
of the EOS 5 and similar (older) cameras. This is, because TTL
flash metering in this case works as a "partial" metering with
most of the weight on the region(s) linked to the active AF sensor.
If you focus on the person in the foreground and then recompose
so, that the most important regions now meter the distant background,
this will obviously lead to overexposure. It is worse than the dumbest
single sensor TTL flash metering in this case, because the main subject
will not be metered at all.

I certainly agree that Nikons 3D flash metering is far superior in
this respect, because you can't mess it up as easily by "user errors".
