<I have a friend who is the head of Preservation for
<the entire
<University of California system. He says the biggest
<problem
<anticipated for the CD_ROM medium is delamination.
<Estimates run from
<15-30 years for onset. We certainly already know
<from music
<recordings that they are far from problem-free.

My friend who is an archievist told me that the best
current thinking is to assume that a modern CD will
last 10 years. At that point it must be recopied to
another CD or whatever the current medium of choice
is. The CD may last longer than 10 years, but the
odds of it self destructing become much greater after
10 years.
