I know what you mean! Perhaps the system is clever enough to turn off
its *auto* compensation when you dial in any amount of compensation
yourself. Personally I have -1 stop dialled in all the time on my
550EX and I generally find the level of flash to be very nice. I just
get frustrated over which exposure mode I should use - I'm not used
to a camera not setting a fixed shutter speed when the flash is
charged. I find P mode next to useless since its chosen shutter speed
doesn't factor in the currrent focal length (which the camera does
know, of course) so if I use P I often get blurred results due to
camera shake.
