There is custom function that can be added to the eos-1n for high speed
sync. it was intended to permit use with the 380EX provided the flash is
manually set to high speed sync mode. This does not work with the 550EX as
there is no manual hard switch, however the new 420EX does have such a switch
The 1n can be made to work with the 550EX in HS mode, but that it requires
you attach the 550EX to a 1v or 3 cause the HS mode to activative, then
move flash to 1n without turning it off.
This custom function is the one of the extras that can be added from a
limited list. I had it done years agos to my 1n and it does work
I have attached a old e-mail from this mail list describing the 1n optional
extra custom functions and dates back to 1996. see item 4th from end of list.

There has been some debate recently about the existence or otherwise of
new custom functions for *existing* EOS-1N bodies. Well, the rumours
are over - it's a definite fact! I have obtained an official Canon
document which lists the following new custom functions:
o Prevent shutter release if film is not loaded.
o Change default camera settings - set defaults for AF, AE and film
transport, plus set defaults for all CF settings (activated by
clear).
o Switch off metering timer (no 6 second hold on meter reading when
shutter button released).
o Toggle focusing point selection method from auto to manual by
pressing the focus point selection button when shutter button is
depressed.
o Illuminate active focus point when shutter button pressed (messes up
metering in low light and has other side-effects!)
o Switch focus point selection to auto when shutter button depressed
and focus selector button pressed if quick dial is being used for
selection.
o Allow quick dial to select focus point selection mode (NOT on RS).
o Continuous shooting with AEB - does not stop after 3 frames, fires
repeated 3-frame sequences, re-meters before each set.
o 2 frame AEB (which 2 you get is controlled by CF9).
o Continuous AEB with mirror lock (NOT on RS).
o Do not cancel multiple exposure at end of set.
o ******* YES!!!!! ******* Film advances only when shutter button
is released (like on the RT).
o Frame count in viewfinder flashes when 9 or fewer frames remain as
an extra warning.
o Focus points light sequentially in viewfinder during rewind (helps
those with poor hearing or in noisy environment).
o Toggle film rewind mode during rewind by pressing rewind button.
o ******* YES!!!!! ******* High-speed flash synch with 380EX
flash. (NOT on RS).
o Fixed shutter speed for aperture priority AE (disable slow-sync).
o AEB in RS mode (ONLY on RS). Allows 10fps AEB.
o Selectable frame advance rate 1.5fps to 5ps in 0.5fps steps (ONLY
on RS).
Now the bad news:
1. You can only have one of the above added to your 1N."
