From the links in Julian's message it is clear that Canon's
tele-extenders don't work with the 28-70.

Are there 3rd party tele-extenders that will work with
this lens and enable full functionality?

Is it heresy to consider such a thing? ;^)

I'm asking as I took the plunge and should receive my 28-70
soon. I've started a weight training program to ready myself
for the transition from my fly weight 28 -105 to what, by
all accounts, is the much heavier 28-70.
