I've followed this thread with great interest (and learned a lot!);
just further demonstration of what a valuable resource this list is.
Thanks to all who've contributed.
It still sounds like my original plan of getting the ST-E2 + 420EX +
550EX for my Elan 7e is the best solution to my EOS flash needs.
This combination provides me with the following:
1. Lightest AF IR assist (ST-E2);
2. Lightweight flash with best assist for Elan 7 focus sensors
(420EX);
3. Full featured flash, with full manual control (550EX);
4. Ability to have two off camera slave flashes and full ratio
control (all three)--providing Ian's theory is accurate.
