Hi Fred,
It sounds like dirty contacts at the lens side. This is the typical behaviour
when you use a extension tube or a teleconverter and no lens. The camera gets a
bit crazy.
If cleaning the contacts doesn't help, you may like to get in touch with Canon
Service.
A pencil rubber will do just fine. Special contact cleaners are also sold in the
photo stores.
