Well, I'm always putting my lenses in positions where there is the
potential for the front elements to be scratched, so I'd rather replace a
sub-$100 filter than have to replace the lens. Also, bad things seem to
happen when I clean the front elements, so I'd rather minimize that as much
as possible. I did order a lens hood. When I first got all my equipment I
didn't use a filter, but after some bad experiences (not horribly bad, but
just bad enough for me to reconsider) I've gone the filter route.
