I hava a Manfrotto 168 ballhead, which is named Bogen 3055 in the US. I use
it with a Manfrotto 190 (Bogen 3001) and I haven't had any problems using it
with my EOS 3 and a 300/4 Sigma, which is about the same weight as the
70-200/2.8L. I think this head is good value, I guess it costs somewhere
around $50, it is well built, easy to handle and the movement of the ball is
smooth enough. The only problem I encoutered was related to the size of the
quick release plates, I couldn't have plates attached to the camera and the
mount on the lens at the same time, but this was not a big problem for me,
since it only takes a few seconds to attach or remove the plates.
