Jason,
I would plan on using all the lens you can muster. A good TC on a zoom lens
is best. I have shot several Air Shows and usually shoot most of my shots at
800mm (400mm f2.8L + Canon 2X TC). I try to shoot very tight. I use an EOS
3. For most of the shots I picked the largest aperture available (f5.6 with
the above combination). However if you are shooting helicopters or planes
with propellers, try to keep your shutter speed between 1/250 and 1/320 to
give the props a slight blur. I feel this makes a better action shot. I
always try to pick the slowest speed film I can to achieve the above
settings. In the daylight I use ISO 64 or 100. If it is a cloudy day, ISO 400
should be fast enough to get your shots. As a general rule, I do not drop
below 1/125 of a second. This helps me freeze the subject and I have very few
blurred shots.
I have posted a few of my shots on my website. Almost everything you see
there is full frame or very close to it. Good shooting and have a great time.
