This shot was taken with a 1V HS, 300 2.8L IS, EF 2x on fuji 400 neg.

Also with the above setup.
At that time the 300 2.8 IS was borrowed but I have since got my own;-)
I'd have to say 500-600 the min. to get good closeups.
Also, if the planes have propellers don't use too fast of a shutter
speed or the propellers will freeze and the planes look fake.
