Hi Gerard and List,
My EF 50mm f/1.8 has a slight "sandy" feel for manual focussing.
I sent it for a Clean-Lube-Adjust (CLA) that cost about twice the
price of the lens itself! It still feels the same.
Don't bother about CLA. Spend the money on a new EF 50mm f/1.8 II
instead. Or better yet, save some more and get the EF 50mm f/1.4.
