Same here. Mark I, that is. I've never tried a Mark II, but I've
tried or used three different Mark Is (okay okay technically they're
simply EF 50mm 1.8s) and they all felt slightly "sandy", if you will,
when focusing manually.
Never full-on gritty or grindy - just a slightly rough feeling. Much
rougher than any USM lens, of course, but also rougher than the two
EF 28mm 2.8s I've used, which externally at least look about the
same. The 50mm focusing ring also tends to slip or jump slightly when
you turn it for the first time after switching from AF to M modes.
I'm presuming it's just part of their somewhat low-end construction.
