Hello all
Thanks for all the advise so far.
I took my EOS 3 today to the Canon distributor here in Portugal (Canon
doesn't have it own tech repair service here) and when presented with
the misalignment problem, their answer was "It's normal". This is the
answer they automatically give you when a product is under warranty (and
therefore then won't be making any money repairing it). When I told them
I was a member of an internet mailing-list for EOS gear and several
people around the world reported the problem, they acknowledge that they
hadn't really understood what I was talking about, since nobody had yet
reported this kind of problem.
Then they took the camera to a technician and returned with this
explanation:
The focusing points are aligned to match the standard screen that is
fitted with every new camera. This alignment may not exactly match other
screens like the Ec-D. They then said they could align the focusing
points but they did not guarantee that they would still be aligned if I
changed screens again.
Having read Jonathan's previous mail on this subject, it seems they just
"made up" an explanation (also very typical of them). Besides I would
have to pay for this alignment, as it was not covered by the warranty,
since the standard screen did not present this problem. In truth, the
standard screen is slightly misaligned, but since
it hasn't a cross in the middle it is harder to prove it. They looked at
it and said that, for them, it looked perfectly aligned! So, it was my
word against their "sight problems".
Now my question is: Did anyone received this answer from their local
Canon repair services? These guys here are only in the business to make
as much money as possible. Everyone complains, but for some unknown
reason they still hold the right to distribute Canon products in
Portugal exclusively (maybe they have a long-term contract).
If I really have to pay for this alignment, is it expensive? Is it worth
doing it? Is it even possible? Since they have never done it, it seems
to me they are going to use my camera as a "guinea-pig".
Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Hugo Lopes
P.S. Does someone know to whom I should report this behavior from
thelocal distributor? It's not he first time I and other people have
problems with them. I thought of sending a mail or fax to Canon Europe
but don't know to whom or which department should I send it. Any ideas?
