Julian:
I can't answer a lot of this, but somewhat related, the 70-180 f/4.5-5.6
macro is apparently a very well regarded lens among Nikkor users. I recall
the late John Netherton, who had a regular column in Outdoor Photographer
until he passed away last March, commenting on the lens. About a year ago
he said that he had been using the 70-180 with so much success with not only
macro application, but also as a regular zoom in that focal range, that he
disposed of his (heretofore) highly regarded 80-200. Netherton asserted
that the 70-180, while not as fast, completely supplanted his use of the
80-200 f/2.8 Nikkor and he found it every bit as sharp and clearly more
versatile.
