I think it would be hard to advertise on TV for an SLR, since it is a relatively
specialized market (most people go P&S or digital). The only TV ads I've seen for
SLRs are for the Canon Rebel (Andre Agassi).

Even the ads in the print magazines are very uninformative. Look at the ads for a
Nikon N80 and for the Elan 7E. Is there anything in the ads that compare the two or
state the advantage of one over the other? Not that I can see.

For example in the issue of Popular Photography that reviews the Elan 7E, the ad for
the 7E discusses ECF, mentions that it has "automatic exposure and metering", the
"world's most comprehensive line of autofocus EF lenses", and mentions 4 fps.

The Nikon ad (more visible as the back cover), mentions On Demand Grid lines, 5 focus
points, electronic DOF preview, 10 segment metering, built-in-flash, custom settings,
and "access to the vast lineup of superior Nikkor lenses and accessories."

There is nothing in the ad that would want me to go to either Canon or Nikon. No
mention of IS or USM. No mention of 3-d flash metering or E-TTL. No mention of
backward compatibility with MF Nikkor lenses.

In fact, the only reason I went to Canon is because the only SLR that Best Buy sold
was the Canon Rebel XS.

I am glad I went to Canon because, after research, I think their lens selection is
better and the bodies are easier to use. One thing that I don't like about Nikon is
that their naming system of lenses is very confusing, as is the compaitbility between
older lenses and the cheaper bodies. But that would only be an issue for those who
own older Nikkor lenses and want to upgrade the bodies.

If I were advertising, I would emphasize the lens selection and the ease of use.
