I also hear and feel the "Rattle" as I like to call it with the 100-400 IS 
L on my A2.  As per my instruction manual it is normal.  Have never had a 
problem with image quality so it must be ok.  Have hand held that lens at 
400mm with a shutter speed of 1/10 of a second and gotten a sharp pic.  I 
recently purchased a 28-135 IS and while checking it out on my A2 at the 
dealer I could not feel the "Rattle" when I let go of the shutter 
button.  I thought something was wrong with the lens.  After getting it 
home I used it with a slower shutter speed and could feel that "Rattle" 
when I let go of the button.  A couple times I couldn't feel the "Rattle" 
and found that IS was off when I thought it was on.  That has saved a 
couple of low light photos for me.
