Trenton,
For the tension ring to actually do it's job, you have to hold the focus
ring and turn the tension ring separately. The tension is only applied as
it is turned relative to the focusing ring. I don't know why Canon designed
it this way, but it works. I have never had an instance of accidently
focusing and loosening or tightening the tension ring inadvertantly. Go
back to the store and try holding the focusing ring and turning the tension
ring then zooming in or out and you'll quickly get the concept.

Hi-

I was at my local camera shop yesterday and I tried out the 100-400mm
f/4.5-5.6L IS USM, and I've got a question. (that the salesman didn't seem
to know)

Is there some sort of locking device that will prevent the manual focusing
ring from also moving the zoom tension ring? Or is it a design flaw? This
was really annoying. I would tweak the manual focusing ring, and the zoom
tension ring would move back and fourth right along with it. We even
tightened down the tension ring as tight as it would go, and sure enough,
you move the MF ring and the tension ring would loosen up and move with it.
What am I missing here?

Thanks,
Trenton
