I would also, or even 24-105, provided the lens was well-corrected and not too
slow on the long end (f/3.5 or f/4). But given the realities of lenses that
cover that focal range in today's market, I would find them useful only for
situations were photography wasn't a primary goal, in which case size and weight
would be a major consideration. In this regard, neither the EF 28-135 IS nor the
Tamron 24-135 are suitable--for me. And in truth, the EF 24/2.8 is so small and
lightweight that carrying it with the EF 28-105 or 70-200/4L or the 100/2 is
hardly a burden--and I suspect it will easily out-perform the 24mm setting of
any zoom lens.
But it all depends on what you like to shoot and how you like to work (and your
budget).
I was going to say that I couldn't imagine travelling with just a 24mm lens
until I realized you meant only one *zoom* lens. :-)
