To control shape and to control whether there ARE ANY in spots where
they're not desirable. I recall reading an article in (I think) American
Photo a year or so ago about what goes into a car studio shot. It was a
great deal, including lining the insides of the wheels, in front of the
brakes with black velvet so the chrome wheels sparkle more and the brake
assembly doesn't show.
