This poor lens has an undeserved reputation, I think. 
I used to own one, and was quite pleased with the
results.  In the range up to 200 or so, I think it's
on par with your current lens.  AT 300mm it's a bit
soft, but I don't think it's any worse than your lens
would be with a 1.4x 3rd party TC.

It does, however, have some real weaknesses.  It's got
a micro USM motor, not ring USM like (I think) your
lens.  AF is noticeably slower, but not because of IS.
 The other drawback, if you like to use a polarizer,
is that the front element rotates during focus.
