First off let me state I am not excessively compulsive about cleaning lenses, believing
more damage is too frequently done in the process than any advantage
to be gained can ever offset. I take care of my lenses but there comes a time when that
front element starts to look a bit grungy. The usual culprit is
drizzle and spray, sometimes salt spray in my case.

I have both the EF300/2.8L IS and EF600/4L IS telephotos. These lenses, according to
"LensWork II," have a plane parallel front element designed to protect the soft and
easily scratched fluorite element immediately behind. This fluorite element is the
first
"real" lens in the optical train. I have not been able to determine if the plane
parallel element carries any coatings that could be scratched in the cleaning process.
Anyone know?

I would like to clean the front element of both of these lenses. If there is no
coating,
I don't see why a simple commercial glass cleaning product could not be safely used on
them. Does anyone disagree?
