Based on Canon's numbering system, one would presume that the older hood fits a
mount--in this case the lens barrel--that is 83 mm in diameter, while the new
one fits a mount that is 86 mm in diameter. ("E" for EF, "T" for telephoto, 86
for the diameter of the lens barrel, in millimeters. In FD days, the hood
designations were BX-xx, where "B" represented the bayonet hood mount, "X" was
W, N, or T (wide, normal, telephoto), and xx was the mount diameter in
millimeters).
