I seriously thought about the Dynax/Maxxum 7 and was put off by the price.
What I really want to do is move over to Elan in order to have the Canon
lenses, which I can share with my daughter (I bought her an Elan IIe last
year). But maybe that difference between 0-18 and 1-18 is the clincher that
I should get a II and hold out for the next generation of Canon. I really
think they made a mistake in skimping in this area on the 7. The lack of
spot metering and PCS terminal are minor compared with this, in my opinion.
I really like the improvements in general, and also the quiet operation of
the Elan 7, but this focus thing is just too much for me.

I really think they should separate the a/f assist function completely from
the flash function and put it on a separate button control. This should be
true of both built in assist lights and the lights on a flash unit itself.
They should then go one step further and offer, perhaps as part of a battery
pack or some other attachment, an add-on a/f assist light, or one that
somehow attatches to the camera but doesn't interfere with the flash
systems.
Thanks for relating your experiences.
