The specs indicate what lighting range AF should operate without assist.
That's EV 0-18 for ElanII and A2E, EV 1-18 Elan7 at ISO100. I tried the
camera on a f/2.8 lens in the store, it hunts in low contrast scenes, but
was acceptable in other situations. I soon found that I need a Speedlite's
IR AF assist when I got home with a 28-105mm f/3.5-4.5. Now that I kinda
think of it, the Minolta Dynax 7 was about as much as the Elan7E + 420EX, oh
well...

I have the 420EX attached most of the time, and yes, it is heavy with 4 AAs
loaded and cumbersome. But as I use bounced flash for most of my indoor
shots and fill for some outdoor shots (lens hood prevents the use of the
builtin flash), it didn't bother me as much as I initially anticipated. Oh,
did I mention I bought the 420EX primarily for the IR AF assist? :)

There is a CF to disable the flash from firing. However, it is not
convenient when switching shots with and without flash. I would much prefer
if the AF assist would work when the flash is turned off, of better yet,
another button to toggle AF assist on the flash unit.
