My first own camera (before I used my father's AE2) was a Minolta
700si. Unfortunately, due to the circumstances I bought it quite in a
rush. To make the story short, I was not very happy with it. Later on I
did look more carfully into different cameras (Minolta, Canon, Nikon,
Pentax) and figured that Canon was what I was looking for. First I did
get a used EOS 5 with an 80-200/2.8 for a great price. Besides the fact
that the EOS 5 did drain my batteries like crazy I did not regret the
buy. Now what do I like about Canon better then Minolta? AF with the
USM lenses (as well as the ARC of the 80-200) is much faster then the
Minolta. I must admit that I compared professional Canon lenses with
relatively cheap cosumer lenses by Minolta. But I have also looked into
better lenses from Minolta (i.e.70(80?)-200/2.8) and still found the
Canon superior. Also Canon's USM lenses made very little noise compared
to any of the Minolta lenses. In addition, the handling of the Canon's
bodies was better and more intitutive then Minoltas (and even more so
compared to Nikon). Minolta did have a few better features, though.
This includes the HS+wirless flash (which Canon also has now), storing
personal settings that can be quickly loaded for different shooting
situations, the custom card to store information for each shot taken
(quite useless if you change film. All other cards are completely
useless), etc. But honestly, I never did regret to change to Canon and
I do not miss any of Minolta's feature that much. In my opinion, Canon
has all the important advantages as many different kind of lenses, IS,
USM, good bodies, good customer service, etc.
