>>I don't think so. Correct me if I'm worng, but I think the red AF
assist function depends in part on a crossbeam pattern in the light,
which would be missing from either of the on-camera lights.<<

It is a clearly defined- Yikes, I just checked on-camera vs on flash
(Vivitar 730AF)AF assist, and on the IIE the camera's lite is larger and
brighter by a factor of tens, no exaggeration. I used to have a couple
of Sunpaks and I don't remember this aspect of them so well. I think
they were a lot larger than the Vivitar, at least. I'm glad I don't
have to count on the flash AF assist! On camera AF assist is three
large circles with crosshatches, and a 300mm lens only blocked about 20
percent of the leftmost circle, or about 7 percent of the total, not a
problem in real life..
Now I'm remembering, I bought my first add-on flash because the AF
assist of the Rebel ?? I had was white and bothersome, and not much use
compared to my first Rebel.
In any case, I most certainly expect Canon to put out a running fix
to this, and hopefully it will retrograde purchasers of the white AF
assist version.
