Hello,
I posted a note last week about how my 28-105 broke down after an impact
(elements and zoom are fine but focus motor is no longer connected to
element-barrel). Thanks to a response from a fellow lister, I learned that
this lens has a true Achilles heel: delicate plastic tabs (which broke, of
course) that hold the outer lens barrel to the element assembly, or
something of the sort. The repair for this lens is as much or more than a
used one in good condition, so that forces me to rethink the idea of simply
repairing/replacing it. (Plus, my income has been less-than-stellar this
year.)
It seems as though I'm not going to start babying my equipment -- I like to
go kayaking, cave-dwelling, running, hiking, roller-blading with my camera
on my back. Sometimes I fall. Maybe I should get a Yashica T4, but for
now, it's Canon (body's doing fine!).
So the question is: irrespective of price, what's the most rugged
wide-angle lens in the EF lineup? I already have a 50mm 1.8 and the
70-200L 4, so it's just the lower end of the spectrum that I'm missing. I
don't need wider than a 20mm, though. I guess the EOS culprits (including
discontinued models) would be 20-35 3.5; 20-35L; 28-70L; 28-70 3.5; and the
20mm, 24mm and 28mm primes. I'm open to non-Canons as well. Again, my
only interests are wide, (relatively) sharp and durable.
Any thoughts on:
-- zoom vs. prime: is a 28-70L or 20-35 3.5 going to be able to take the
rough stuff worse/better than a 28, 24 or 20 2.8, in general? Your
experiences would be of great interest to me.
-- specifics: I'm leaning towards thinking a 24 2.8 is what the MD ordered,
but is the increased weight/size over the 28 something that is a detriment
to "heavy" use? I don't care about carrying an extra oz. or two for my own
sake, just for durability. Again, I'd love to hear experience.
Thank you, thank you and thanks again!
