The HS sync does reduce the effective range of the flash. "Useless" is too
strong a word, however. If you're shooting all the way across the field in
football, you would probably have a light problem on 800 film. For
basketball and other indoor sports, I think you'd have plenty of light.
OTOH, I've never had a problem with 1/200th or 1/250th, but I've shot a
limited amount of football.
One other thing I didn't mention in my previous post was shutter lag time. I
think it takes some getting used to with any camera, and once you're
comfortable with the lag time on one body, it becomes more problematic to
use another. That will probably be one of your bigger obstacles if you make
the switch.
And don't feel bad. I might loan the 3 to my wife, but not a really good
lens she might drop!
