I once had this sort of problem when fooling around with a Nikon FE2. That
camera is powered by button cells, and it turned out I'd put the battery in
upside down, so shorting the circuits. On correcting the battery the mirror
did come down with some assistance and was fine thereafter.

It certainly sounds like your 3 has some kind of electrical problem ( with
this lens at least), though exactly what beats me! Could there be some kind
of shorting between circuits going on?
