They aren't rack and pinion, but in my experience, the very minor
refocusing that is needed after positioning the RRS slider causes little
noticeable change in framing. What's nice about the RRS slider, especially
the older B31 that I have, is the weight and compactness. I've used it
with the EF 180 f/3.5 and the TS-E f/2.8 (with the focusing slider mounted
to the camera).
If you insist on rack and pinion drive, the Kirk focusing rail is
compatible with Arca-Swiss style mounting plates. I haven't used it in the
field, but I did play with it in a store and it seems fairly solid. Mor
