As Keith states, some EOS3s experience a complete drain of battery power whenever a
lens is left mounted on them despite the body switch being left in the off position.
In my case it was the EF300/2.8 L IS but I
never considered it was a problem that occurred only with the "super- teles" as he
relates. I can't imagine why/how this would be so. It was the only lens I had at the
time. A software update by Canon Canada, at
no charge, fixed the problem. CF-19 was added at the same time but this seemed a
separate action from the update according to the service ticket I received when the
camera was returned. The ticket reads: "Update
from 6D to 6E firmware. CF19 added. Adjusted exposure." The work was carried out April
30, 2000. The camera's purchase date is unknown. It was used and purchased at ebay
auction. I would guess it was less than 6
months old at the time.
I have no idea if new EOS3s bought off the shelf today come with the affected firmware
or not but I would find out before buying and get the update as soon as possible if it
is required. Also, I do not know how
to determine which firmware is loaded into the body other than checking for CF-19. If
CF-19 is not there, it seems likely the loaded firmware will indeed suffer from the
battery drain problem.
