The actual AF sensors are behind the mirror. The components that superimpose the
focus points onto the focusing screen are built into the viewfinder.

I have no explanation of the meaning of "BASIS," but as Vincente points out, it
is the sensor/processor for Eye-Controled Focus. On the EOS 3 at any rate, it is
located above the viewfinder window, oriented horizontally (flat).
