Well, the eyes weren't so big, but it did cover the entire box of the sensor
in the viewfinder.
Maybe the lighting was the main culprit, being warmish tungsten, thus
reducing contrast further.

It also improves if I manually prefocus close to the actual point, then only
activate AF.
The one second part in your suggestion will work well for still subjects.
Last night, I gave Elan7's AF a test with the same 28-105 f/3.5-4.5 lens.
Going down to 2" @ f/4.5 ISO100 the AF still works, but exhibited
inconsistency.  Prefocus helps a lot, otherwise, the lens just hunts back
and forth.  Of course, this is without any AF assist, and only the center
sensor was used.
The subject is the legs of a table, shaded fro light, partial-metering was
used.
Well, the subject is very different from what I actually shoot, except when
they're sleeping, maybe. ;-)
