Subject: EOS TTL, A-TTL, and E-TTL

What do I need to do when using a flash with my Elan 7? Is the FEL button
necessary for E-TTL? What is the difference between TTL, A-TTL, and E-TTL,
and how do I use each one? I mostly want consistent, multi segmented TTL
flash metering. Thanks.

You don't need to use FEL for E-TTL. If you have an E-TTL flash (EX series), E-TTL
will be used, unless you put the flash in manual mode. As far as I know, with an Elan
7 and an external flash, you can't use either A-TTL or TTL, only E-TTL..

As for using E-TTL, in P mode, the E-TTL's pre flash automatically determines the
flash exposure and it is pretty much point and shoot. You can use FEL to meter off a
specific portion of the scene, if desired, but it is typically not necessary. In Av
and Tv, the scene is metered to result in a correct exposure for both the foreground
and the background.

In M mode, you set the shutter speed to 1/125 or below and can set the desired
aperture. By pressing the FEL button prior to exposure, you can determine if the
flash is powerful enough to result in a correctly exposed photo; when you press the
FEL button, the flash indicator in the viewfinder blinks if the flash exposure cannot
be achieved.
