Hi,

The trick with capturing meteors is that you have to leave the camera
shutter open for as long a period as possible without fogging the film.
Don't worry about star trails they make the images interesting and also
allow you to show clearly the captured meteor trail because they will appear
to move at a different angle than the trailed stars.  Try Sky & Telescope
and Astronomy magazine web sites for tips.  Slower lenses are not
necessarily bad but a lens with too long a focal length will not capture
enough sky to get the meteor trails you want.
