FWIW. I use AE lock all the time, since often where I'm focusing isn't what I
want to meter.

As the manual states, the AE lock on the Elan 7/EOS 30 holds for four
seconds--no need to hold the button constantly. However, in cases where this
isn't long enough it may be necessary to take a reading and then set exposure
manually.
