Well speaking solely on the 550EX, I think it works great for football. I normally shoot with a 400/2.8 or the 70-200/2.8 on a -3 with Fuji 800 Press. My camera is set to 200 (max sync) F2.8 with ETTL flash. The exposure without flash would be in teh neighborhood of 125, F2.8 with 3200 ISO film. The results are amazing with this flash especially compared to what I was getting with a -1N and a 540EZ. Your results may vary with the d30. If you're interested I could email you an example or two.
On a side note, I think the new fuji press with the 4th color layer is a great film. Highly recommend it, especially for pushing to 1600 or 3200.
