If you are not going to be travelling for long
periods of time to shoot these images, you might
consider renting. A shop local to me rents the
600mm f4 IS for $75 USD per day, the 400 f2.8 IS
for $65 USD and the 100-400 4-5.6 for $25 USD
per day. This would be a great chance for you
to see if the 100-400 is sufficient for your
needs, and, if you can get away with it, you
might not need to actually buy the lens at all,
just rent as needed. I've done just that when I
was engaged to shoot some surfing pictures, and
needed the 600mm. One use does not justify
$9000.
