Ken,

If the macro isn't handled right, the sharpness can make a vain person
quite unhappy by showing any "flaws" in the finished product.  Any
blemishes will be sharp and obvious, maybe not to you or me, but the
subject may not appreciate them.

That's why the soft filters you allude to are important.
