I don't think a macro lens would help. I don't know whether the working
distance of the lens that is connected to the camera has any effect on the
overall working distance, but it was already a very small distance (from
less than an inch to a couple of inches), so a close-focusing lens would
not seem to offer any great advantage.I don't know whether a prime would
have been better. I wonder whether one factor that contributed to the
rather extreme vignetting was that the 50mm f/1.8 is physically a little
narrower than the 75-300 IS (52mm filter size as against 58mm). I would
have liked to try this with my 180mm macro lens, but the filter size is
even greater on that lens.
