I started using the 75-300IS + 50/1.8 combination and I gave it up (except when
it's absolutely needed).
What I'm using quite often is the new 100/2,8 macro with the 50/1.8 inversed on
it. (of course I reused my home baken adaptor ring 58-52mm ;-)
The results are sharp, sharp sharp!  (no the softy results the former
combinations gives)
I get about 3x due to the internal focusing of the macro lens.
To go even further I put extension tubes behind this configuration. Now I'd like
to have an 2x TC to see how this cocktail would  behave.

Primes give you better results, but it has to be a rather slow lens, since it
will be very difficult to find matching lenses to invert on a big diameter
without suffering from vigneting.
