Hi all,

I recently had the privilage of loaning the 70-200mm IS lens from Canon as
well as a D30. Let me make it clear that I do not own a D30, I am thinking
of getting the D30 to shoot wedding photography.

First and most of all, the lens feels really solid in your hands. There is
no build quality issues what so ever. Im used to lugging around my 1v and
28-70mm L lens all day long, but this baby coupled with the D30 = 3kg or
more! At the end of the day, my arms were a bit tired. A monopod is a must.

Lens quality, no doubt I ran some tests to compare this lens to my 70-200mm
f4 L. Using the digital photos, I could not see a difference in quality when
zoomed into an image (600%) in photoshop. Straight lines are perfectly
straight on this lens, no barrel or pin cushion detect across the entire
frame. Maybe this is largely due to the fact the D30 has a 1.6 multiplyer
effect. I have tried to shoot film with this lens, though I havent recieved
my prints back yet. Images are very contrasty and perhaps a bit too sharp
for portrait photography, though with the D30, you get a softer looking
image anyways.

I think Canon has got it right with this lens, its a beautiful lens to own,
in Australia it sells for about $3800 AUD, (1900USD). A bit more than the
non IS version. I think the extra $700AUD is worth it for the IS feature and
weather improvements.

The D30, personally im yet to venture into the world of digital photography.
I have clients who ask me about it all the time. After evaluating the D30, I
found the images to be a bit on the noisy side. Dont blast me for saying
this people! Digital has yet to catch up to film.

I think my next purchase will be the 70-200 f/2.8 IS L lens, its great to
use in low light situations (especially in churches where no flash is
allowed) to complement my 70-200mm f/4 L lens (its a great lens, optically
the two lens are nearly identical in terms of final picture quality). Sadly
though, I will have to give the D30 a pass for the time being, maybe i'll
take a look at the 1D!!

Post your comments or questions if you have any.

Happy Holidays everyone!!!
